Former Mayor Jerry Pelayo to File Charges Against Vloggers for Hunting Endangered Ducks

Former Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo plans to file charges against vloggers allegedly involved in the illegal hunting of wild Philippine ducks, locally known as “dumara.”

These ducks are classified as an endangered species, with their population estimated to be between 3,300 and 6,700 remaining. The incident has raised serious concerns about the conservation of these birds and the protection of local wildlife.

Pelayo, who initiated the Ibon-Ebon Festival in Pampanga back in 2008, expressed disappointment over the actions of at least 12 individuals. These vloggers reportedly boasted about hunting the wild ducks in their videos.

Among those identified by Pelayo are Kulaki Hunter, Kasipat Hunter, Jhonie Bellen, and X4 Raf Hunter.

The former mayor has sought assistance from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to identify and build a case against the individuals involved.

He plans to charge them with violations of Republic Act 9147, known as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. This law aims to safeguard wildlife and their habitats from exploitation and harm.

If proven guilty, the accused could face severe penalties, including hefty fines and imprisonment of up to 12 years. Pelayo’s move highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for actions that endanger protected species.

The wild Philippine duck is an important part of the ecosystem and plays a major role in maintaining ecological balance. Incidents like this point out the need for stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws and greater awareness of the importance of conservation.

Pelayo’s efforts remind us of the responsibility everyone shares in preserving the environment and its inhabitants for future generations.
