Police Authorities Arrest Two Suspects for Stealing Balikbayan Box Items in Quezon City

Two suspects landed in jail after allegedly stealing items from balikbayan boxes in a delivery truck in Quezon City.

The robbery incident was captured on CCTV at D. Tuazon Street and Scout Alcaraz Street around 1 p.m. on Wednesday (November 20, 2024).

In the video, the suspects were seen clinging to the back of the delivery truck. According to La Loma police, while the actual theft wasn’t caught on camera, the suspects reportedly took some Balikbayan box items meant for delivery.

The truck driver only realized the items were missing when he reached his delivery destination. He quickly reported the incident to the police for assistance.

After an eight-hour hot pursuit operation, authorities apprehended the suspects in Dagat-Dagatan, Navotas. Police identified the duo as members of the so-called “Spiderman Gang,” a group known for targeting delivery trucks.

“Parte sila nung tinatawag nating spiderman gang kasi sumasabit sila eh. Ang modus po nila ay nag-aabang ng mga delivery truck o mga container van kapag nakakita sila ng tiyempo ito po ay aakyatin nila. Usually po nag aabang sila sa mga stop light. Once na huminto po itong truck agad po sila sasampa,” La Loma police station commander PLtCol. Ferdinand Casiano said.

Their method involves waiting at stoplights, climbing onto trucks, and stealing items when the vehicles stop. The authorities recovered the stolen items, including shoes, appliances, and office supplies valued at over P100,000 from the suspects.

Police revealed that the suspects had been involved in similar crimes before, but previous victims often withdrew complaints. This time, the two men admitted to the crime, citing financial needs as their reason.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) reminded the public, especially delivery companies, to secure their vehicles properly and stay vigilant, particularly during the Christmas season when such crimes are more common.

“Siguraduhin po sana nilang nakalock ang mga container van nila. Doble alerto sana tayo ngayon lalo na’t Christmas season, marami po ang mapagsamantala ngayon,” Casiano added.

The suspects are now detained at the La Loma police station and face theft charges. The police urge everyone to remain cautious to prevent falling victim to similar schemes.
