DepEd Seems To Have Better Plan for SHS Students
The target of the Department of Education (DepEd) to reduce the Senior High School core subjects presents a more ideal field for the students to master what they really have to.
A huge part of the Filipino populace in the country is composed of students. These individuals are being honed to ready them to the field of employment and the “real world” as many people would say. However, isn’t it that pushing so much things to learn for these students will do more bad than good?
Truth be told that the Philippine educational curriculum is composed of a lot of subjects and each one may pose a challenge to the learner in handing the lessons to be learned, the projects to be done, the tests to be taken, the review, and a lot more. Let us not forget that this may be the case not just in one subject but many subjects.
Recently, the Department of Education saw the need to review the curriculum in the Senior High School level in the pursuit to make the graduates more employable. The education department plans to reduce the SHS core subjects from 15 to just 5 or 6.
It is my humble opinion that this move of the education department may be a nod towards a set of senior high school graduates who have mastered the skills and lessons that they have to. What can the students get if there are so many core subjects but they can’t even manage to master of what they need to learn under these 15 subjects?
DepEd wants to give SHS more time for their on-the-job trainings — which I believe would do the students a lot of good. This is already a field training for them which can be taken as an experience. Truth be told that most employers out there look into the experiences of the job applicants and a very short OJT time may not give the graduates better chances to get the job.
I do believe that what is needed to prepare these graduates and give them a bigger chance to be employed is to really pack them with skills that are needed for the job. Longer OJT while they are schooling may give them the chance to apply what they have learned through the years and keep on bettering it through application.
Truth be told that what most employers want is to hire workers who know how to do the job by applying what they have learned than someone who has a lot of learning in his/her head but does not know how to apply it. Thus, taking this plan of reducing the classroom time in exchange of longer trainings in the field may benefit everyone — the graduates, the employers, and even the education department which may have the chance to rule out and determine the important lessons.
