92-Year-Old Grandpa Makes His Own Coffin While Still Alive as He Prepares for His Looming Demise
A 92-year-old grandpa from Palanas, Masbate has made his own coffin, despite still being very much alive.
The elderly man identified as Lolo Sayling, who stands 5’4” tall made the coffin from a mahogany tree that he had planted when he was just 30 years old. He designed the coffin himself, making sure it was a perfect fit for his frame.
For him, this is not an unusual task, as he has spent decades working with wood and creating things with his hands.
While many people might find it unusual or even horrible, Lolo Sayling sees it as a practical step. He explained that he didn’t want to burden his family with funeral preparations when his time came.
The grandpa even prepared his burial clothes and set aside money for the priest who would lead his funeral service. In addition, he has already chosen his final resting place in the cemetery.
His neighbors have mixed reactions to the situation. Some are startled to learn that he has a coffin ready in his home, but Lolo Sayling assures them not to be afraid, saying, ‘wag sila matakot kasi ‘di naman sila ginagambala’.
Despite the eerie nature of his preparations, he’s comfortable with it and even jokingly adds that he isn’t scared of having his coffin in the house. “‘Di nga ako natatakot kahit nasa bahay namin ‘yung kabaong,” he said.
Lolo Sayling lost his wife in 2017 and has been living alone since. He often remembers their life together and, in moments of quiet, sings to her, wishing for her to take him, showing that his heart is ready to reunite with his beloved.
“Gusto ko na rin na kunin na ako. PAgkatapos kong magdasal, kinakantahan ko and asawa ko. Inaawitan ko siya na kunin na ako,” he added.
