Controversial Principal in El Nido Reassigned to Another School
The controversial principal in El Nido was removed from her post after humiliating a teacher and has since been reassigned.
On September 25, 2024, El Nido National High School in Palawan has appointed a new principal. Principal I Romelyn L. Lavega, from Bagong Bayan, El Nido, has taken over the leadership of the school.
District Supervisor Rowena J. Gaviana introduced Lavega to replace the former principal, Tessie Pilar Lampago who was removed from her position following a controversy involving allegations of mistreatment.
Mary Hazel Austria, a Teacher I from the same school, filed a formal complaint against Lampago, accusing her of daily humiliation and verbal abuse. Austria claimed that Lampago consistently embarrassed her in front of both colleagues and students during July and August, with incidents occurring even in the school canteen.
Austria’s child, who also attends the school, was also allegedly dragged into the principal’s harsh actions.
According to Austria, the constant attacks had reached a point where she could no longer tolerate them. She explained that many of her fellow teachers were afraid to speak up, fearing retaliation from the administration.
Initially, she felt the same, but after enduring the abuse for months, she decided to stand up and file the complaint. Austria revealed that she had kept the situation from her husband for a long time but eventually shared the distressing experiences with him.
The National Association of Public Secondary School Heads Inc. (NAPSSHI) in Palawan has acknowledged the complaint, but the former principal, Lampago, has not issued any statement.

The Department of Education (DepEd) in Palawan has yet to provide a formal response to the incident. Austria’s courage to expose this issue has led to Lampago’s transfer to Bagong Bayan National High School.
