Family Feud Erupts Over Attack on Titan Manga Collection in Taiwan

A 20-year-old man filed a case against his mom for allegedly disposing his beloved Attack on Titan manga collection.

A young guy from Chiayi City, Taiwan, is at odds with his mother after she discarded his prized 34-volume collection of the manga series Attack on Titan, which he considers a valuable collector’s item.

In February 2024, the 64-year-old mother, identified by her surname Chien she decided to throw away the manga volumes of her son, believing they were taking up too much space in their home

Chien acted without informing her son, who was away at the time. Upon returning home and discovering the loss, the young man was furious.

The young man’s anger escalated to the point of involving the police and filing a lawsuit against his mother. He argued that her actions causes destruction of his personal property without his consent.

In court, he emphasized that Attack on Titan is a highly regarded series and that the lost volumes would be difficult, if not impossible, to replace as they were no longer in print, making them true collector’s items.

Chien defended her actions by stating that the volumes were damp and taking up valuable space. She expressed a desire to fix their relationship, but her son remained unwilling to settle their differences.

The guy did not attend court hearings and rejected her son’s proposal for an out-of-court settlement. The court ultimately ruled in favor of the son, emphasizing that, despite their familial ties, his rights to his belongings should have been respected.

Chien was ordered to pay NT$5,000 (approximately P8,778.73) for damages. There’s a possibility for this amount to be reduced to community service if she appeals. As of now, the son has chosen not to reconcile with his mother.
