Breed discrimination? Restaurant Balay Dako faces backlash after rejecting an Aspin dog.
Tagaytay restaurant Balay Dako issues statement following the backlash received after their staff did not allow entry to an Aspin.
Breed-friendly not pet friendly? Netizens online were mad after seeing the post of a pet-owner who was fuming mad when this restaurant did not allow her pet Aspin to enter the place. Pet owner Lara Antonio share their experience in a post as she felt like her fur baby was discriminated in a restaurant that says they are “pet friendly”.
The pet guidelines were clear to them at first and they were confident that they will be allowed entrance as that was not their first time. However, when a staff saw Yoda, her Aspin, which she called was a “mixed breed”, as she felt this is the only “palatable” term to “to elitist establishments like Balay Dako”, that was when things went haywire.
Several reasons were cited but the most highlighted was they accordingly just allow medium-sized dogs. When the pet owner asked about their guideline about this such as the weight limit, they expressed they only allow up to 15 kilograms, a figure lower than what the owner initially told them.
After hearing that Yoda is 18 kilograms, that was when they said that they only allow up to 15-kilogram dogs but could not show proof of this as a guideline. In their photos as well, Labradors and Golden Retrievers were accepted, elite breeds which are easily 20 kilograms and higher. So, why not Yoda?
Netizens were just as mad as the pet owner. They felt bad because they felt Yoda was rejected because he’s an Aspin. Currently, the restaurant has been receiving negative comments on their page and in other platforms and many people online call to boycott this establishment.
Amid the buzz, Balay Dako released a statement. The restaurant that called itself “as a company that loves animals”, apologized. They understand how valuable it is to accommodate pets, however, they also need to ensure spacing and guest’s safety.
As of now, they are reviewing the policy of their establishment for a clear, fair, and balanced regulations to both pet owners and non-pet owners. They also added that they are taking steps to ensure that their staff are better trained and guided to understand and implement its policies.
