Man Injured in Shooting After Argument with Security Guard
A 54-year-old security guard ended up in jail after shooting a homeless man who allegedly tried to throw a stone at him.
The incident happened in front of a restaurant the guard was protecting in Barangay Central, Quezon City.
According to Police Major Mike Diaz, Deputy Station Commander of the Quezon City Police District Station 10, the victim was hit on the side and was quickly rushed to the hospital. Diaz explained that the victim appeared to be getting ready to throw a stone at the guard, who then pulled out his gun and fired three shots at the man.
“Itong biktima natin umakto na babatuhin ng bato iyong suspek at agad naman bumunot iyong suspek (ng baril) at pinaputukan ‘tong biktima. Tatlong beses,” Diaz said.
The security guard shared his side of the story, saying he calmly asked the man to leave because customers were about to arrive at the restaurant. However, instead of leaving, the man allegedly shouted at him and acted aggressively.
“Kinausap ko nga siya nang mahinahon na umalis siya kasi siyempre, dadating na iyong mga customer….Eh imbis na umalis siya, sinigawan pa niya ako. Masyadong matapang,” the suspect said.
The guard claimed that the man picked up a large stone, which led to the shooting. The security personnel admitted that the situation escalated quickly, and he was surprised by what happened.
He expressed regret over the incident, especially now that he is in jail. The guard insisted that he acted in self-defense because the man was about to throw the stone at him.
“Kahit ako nga nagulat…Nagsisi naman, siyempre, kasi nakulong na ako. Wala naman ako magawa kasi biglaan ang pangyayari. Hindi naman napigilan. Siyempre, self defense naman talaga ang nangyari,” he further explained.
Major Diaz mentioned that it will be up to the prosecutor to determine if the guard’s actions can be considered self-defense. The case will proceed once the complaint is filed, and the guard now faces charges of frustrated homicide.
