Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake in Sarangani, September 6, 2024

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 5.0 magnitude quake in Sarangani, September 6, 2024. Here are the details.

Following the 5.7 magnitude quake in Northern Samar yesterday, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another province. According to the agency, the quake recently hit Sarangani and it has a magnitude of 5.0.

The earthquake that struck Sarangani, Friday, September 6, 2024, was tectonic in origin. A tectonic quake is a shaking which is a product when the Earth’s crust breaks because of the geological forces on the rocks and the adjoining plates which result to chemical and physical changes.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Sarangani was located at 05.80°North, 125.18°East – 003 km South 48° West of Glan. It had a depth of focus of 022 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake but there may be aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, Intensity II was felt in the following areas:

  • City of General Santos
  • Kiamba, Sarangani

The quake-recording bureau also recorded instrumental intensities in several areas such as the following:

  • Kiamba, SARANGANI

Intensity II

  • Maitum, Malungon, SARANGANI
  • CITY OF GENERAL SANTOS
  • Tupi, SOUTH COTABATO

  • Magsaysay, DAVAO DEL SUR
  • Maasim, and Glan, SARANGANI
  • Tampakan, Koronadal City, Lake Sebu, SOUTH COTABATO

Earthquakes can hardly be predicted accurately as most experts in the field agree on. Thus, most countries really make sure that they have a bureau or an organization that monitors a quake incident across their nation.
