#WalangPasok: Class Suspensions on Monday (August 19, 2024)

Several LGUs Declare Class Suspensions on Monday (August 19, 2024) Due to Taal’s Volcanic SMug

WALANG PASOK – Various local government units have declared class suspensions in several areas due to Taal’s volcanic smug.

On Monday (August 19, 2024), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that there has been a noticeable increase in volcanic smog, also known as vog, from Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours.

Vog consists of sulfur dioxide and other gases from the volcano that mix with the air, water vapor, dust, and sunlight.

Class Suspensions

PHIVOLCS reported that on August 15, the volcano released about 3,355 tons of sulfur dioxide. They also observed that hot volcanic fluids were rising in the Main Crater Lake. The volcano sent out large plumes of smoke that reached up to 2,400 meters high and drifted to the north-northwest.

There have been no volcanic earthquakes detected in the last day. Taal Volcano in Batangas remains at Alert Level 1, which means there is a low level of volcanic activity.
