Science is one of the subjects that is consistently part of the Philippine educational curriculum since Kindergarten up to college. It covers a wide range of topics and there are areas that require experiementation, testing, and the utilization of laboratories thus, it is important to know the equipments and apparatus that can be found inside the lab and how they are used.
There are countless laboratory equipments out there. Meanwhile, there are those that are commonly present in most labs as they serve the biggest functions. Here is a list of some of the common laboratory equipment and apparatus, their functions, and their composition:
Microscope
Undeniably, among the many laboratory equipment and apparatus, one of the most popular is the microscope. It is used in checking tiny specimen via its magnifying lenses that is aided by natural and artificial light. It operates on the principles of the refraction of light and there different lenses such as the objective and the oculus.
- Objective Lense — very close to the sample to be seen
- Oculus Lense — close to the eye and enlarges the previous image even further
Test Tube
Another popular equipment that is usually found in laboratories is the test tube. It is a cylinder pipe that is made of glass and is used in storing and mixing ingredients. It comes in different sizes there are also those that are made of plastic.
Beaker
The beaker is a cylindrical utensil that is made of glass. It has a flat bottom with an upper opening that comes with a spout. It is used to hold substances as well as in mixing liquid ingredients. Like the test tubes, beakers can come in different sizes with measurements.
Volumetric Flask
Also one of the common laboratory equipment is the volumetric flask. It is made of glass and it is used to hold a precise amount of liquid at a precise temperature. It comes in different sizes and is usually used in the preparation of solutions inside the lab.
Bunsen Burner
Laboratories also have bunsen burner. It is an apparatus that produce a single open flame and it is utilized for heating and sterilization purposes inside the lab. It runs on LPG and produces a clean and single flame that is steady.
Thermometer
Another important equipment inside the lab is the thermometer. Undeniably, this is one of the most popular and it is known to be an apparatus used in measuring the temperature of a substance.
