A loving father who chose to sell goods despite the storm lost his life after being crushed by a falling tree in Batangas.

A tragic accident claimed the life of a hardworking man who was simply trying to make a living selling “goto,” a popular Filipino congee. The incident happened during the severe weather brought by Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon.

On late Tuesday night (July 23, 2024), a 46-year-old vendor identified as Virgilio, was crushed by a falling tree while selling his goods at the intersection of Barangay Poblacion 3 in Nasugbu, Batangas.

Witnesses, including Reynaldo Baran, reported that Virgilio’s body was pinned between his sidecar and the motorcycle he used for selling.

The vendor’s wife, Tina, is devastated by the loss. She described her husband as hardworking, caring, and the sole breadwinner for their family. She had warned him not to go out to sell that day due to the heavy rain, but Virgilio insisted he would wait until the rain stopped.

Tina is now struggling to stay strong for their child, who is about to start college. She is reaching out for help to support her family, as she is unable to work due to her own health issues. The family’s financial situation has become even more difficult with the loss of Virgilio.

“Ang lakas kako [ng ulan] pero sabi niya, ‘hindi mamaya pagtila ako’y aalis na, Ako naman po’y hindi na talaga makapagtustos ng paghahanap-buhay dahil ako’y meron na ring karamdaman,” Tina said.

The community is rallying around the grieving family, and many are coming forward to offer their support during this challenging time.

The tragic incident emphasizes the dangers faced by those who continue to work in inclement weather conditions and the importance of community support in times of tragedy.
