STEM Students in Batangas Creates Solar-Powered Waste Disposal & Charger

TRASH INTO POWER – STEM students in Batangas invented a solar-powered waste disposal unit that also charges mobile phones.

STEM students from Calaca Senior High School in Batangas have come up with an amazing invention: a solar-powered waste disposal unit that also charges mobile phones. The device not only helps the environment but also provides a practical solution for charging phones, even during power outages.

The invention works by encouraging people to dispose of plastic bottles properly. When a bottle is placed into the device, it triggers a system that starts charging a mobile phone. In just four minutes, you can give your phone a boost of energy.

This brilliant use of solar power means the device can function anytime, as long as there’s sunlight.

Joemark Gumapac, the research coordinator at Calaca Senior High School, shared his pride in the students’ accomplishment. “Ako po ay sobrang humahanga sa galing ng mga bata dahil kakaiba po talaga, mapapakinabangan siya. At the same time, makakatulong pa po siya sa ating environment,” he said.

In a video, Heart Cabello, the team leader, showed how to use the device. By flipping a switch and inserting an empty plastic bottle, the system recognizes the bottle and starts generating solar power to charge the phone.

The project is made from wood and includes solar panels, sensors, timers, screens, switches, and cables.

The project took two months to complete. The students worked with local experts and their peers in electronics and engineering to bring their ideas to life. They were inspired by the litter they saw around them and wanted to address waste management issues while promoting environmental responsibility.

The bottles collected by the device will be sold to junk shops, and the proceeds will fund environmental projects at the school. Love Legaspi, the student’s research adviser, highlighted the importance of such projects.

“Yung waste management, kung gaano po ka-crucial sa panahon ngayon. Kailangan po makatulong ‘yung ating bawat tao sa environment and isa po ‘yung charging station po na ‘yun na makaka-push po sakanila at makakaengganyo,” said Cabello.
