Male Passenger Accidentally Ends Up in Plane’s Luggage Compartment Due to Severe Turbulence
A male passenger accidentally ended up in the luggage compartment of a plane flying from Spain to Uruguay due to strong turbulence.
On Monday (July 1, 2024), an Air Europa flight from Madrid to Montevideo, Uruguay encountered severe turbulence. The incident led to an emergency landing in Brazil airport and left several passengers with minor injuries.
The flight, identified as UX045, encountered extreme turbulence while en route to its destination. The turbulence was so intense that it reportedly caused a male passenger to become displaced, ending up in an area typically reserved for luggage.
In the video circulating online, fellow travelers rushed to assist the man. The local authorities reported that thirty passengers sustained minor injuries.
According to Zurich Airport Brasil, the local airport operator, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was forced to make an unscheduled stop due to the severity of the situation. The plane touched down at Natal Airport in northeastern Brazil at 2:32 a.m. local time on Monday.
Air Europa confirmed the incident in a statement on social media, explaining that the diversion was required due to the “strong turbulence” encountered during the flight. They assured that the aircraft landed safely and that injured passengers were receiving medical attention.
“Our flight bound for Montevideo was diverted to Natal due to strong turbulence, The plane landed normally and those injured of varying severity are already being treated,” Air Europa said.
The health authorities in Rio Grande do Norte state, where Natal is located, reported that 30 passengers were taken to local hospitals. Fortunately, their injuries were described as minor, ranging from slight abrasions to minor orthopedic traumas.
To address the situation and ensure passengers reach their intended destination, Air Europa announced that a second plane would depart from Madrid later the same day. This aircraft’s purpose was to collect the affected passengers and complete their journey to Uruguay.
