60-Year-Old Elderly Woman Lost Her Life After Attacked by Crocodile While Washing Clothes
An elderly woman from Brgy. Malitub, Bataraza, Palawan was attacked and killed by a crocodile while washing clothes by the river.
A crocodile attack is an incident where a crocodile, a large, predatory reptile, aggressively engages with a human or animal, often resulting in injury or death.
Crocodile attacks can happen in various environments where these reptiles are present, such as rivers, lakes, swamps, and coastal areas.
Around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, the 60-year-old lady victim identified as Monelba Sariol was doing her laundry by the river when the crocodile attacked, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Her body was discovered in the crocodile’s mouth around 11 a.m., and it was recovered about a kilometer away from where she was last seen alive at approximately 1 p.m. the same day.
Sariol, a married woman and a resident of Brgy. Malitub, had no employment. The Bataraza Police investigation revealed that she was washing clothes by the river at around 10 a.m. An hour later, her lifeless body was seen in the crocodile’s jaws.
The exact condition of her body, when it was found, has not been detailed in the police report, and it remains unclear which parts of her body were consumed by the crocodile and which parts were left intact.
The incident points out the dangers posed by wildlife in the area. Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution when near the river, especially during activities like washing clothes that require extended periods close to the water.
Local authorities are now working on measures to prevent such tragic incidents in the future and to ensure the safety of the community. It might include erecting warning signs, implementing safety guidelines, and possibly relocating some of the crocodiles to reduce the risk to humans.
