Kanlaon News – The Volcano Can Erupt Anytime

KANLAON NEWS – The active volcano, as per the agency PHIVOLCS, can erupt anytime as it is still in an unrest condition. Many residents near the Kanlaon already left their homes after the local government ordered a mandatory evacuation for their safety. From Alert Level 1, Kanlaon is now at Alert Level 2.

On June 3, 2024, Kanlaon volcano rumbled and lit up the sky of producing a 5,000-meter plume. This is based on the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-Phivolcs) report.

The Kanlaon volcano eruption spread like wildfire online causing fear among the residents of Canlaon City. As much as we all know, the volcano straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental and hours after it erupted, the alert level was raised to Alert Level 2 or increasing unrest.

The eruption on June 3 occurred at 6:51 p.m. and it erupted for six minutes.

Based on the latest bulletin from the agency, the volcano is calm today but the possibility for it to erupt again is still present. Mariton Bornas, chief science research specialist of Phivolcs, said that, as of today, it is “quietly degassing and producing weak low-frequency volcanic earthquakes”.

The same violent behavior may happen again without any pre-activity despite the calmness. It can happy anytime as long as it’s still in its unrest state.

The following day, the Canlaon City government closed business establishments and tourism destinations near the volcano and mandatory evacuation was ordered. Hundreds of residents were left displaced because of this.

Ashfall and sulfurous odor was also left in 14 LGUs in Negros Occidental. During this event, make sure to be informed on what to do before, during, and after ashfall.

Ashfall occurred in Bago City, La Carlota City, and La Castellana. Sulfurinc odor, on the other hand, reached Bago City, several parts of Bacolod City, La Carlota City, La Castellana, Murcia, and Canlaon City.

Rumbling sounds were heard in La Carlota City, La Castellana, and Canlaon City.
