Carlo J. Caparas passed away
The daughter of Carlo J Caparas confirmed the death of the veteran filmmaker on Saturday night.
Caparas first rose to fame as a comic strip creator. Among the famous characters he created in comics were Panday, Bakekang, Totoy Bato, Tasya Fantasya, Joaquin Bordado, and many more.
Eventually, he became a film producer and director. Some of his comic characters were brought to the big screen and roles were portrayed by notable stars in the Philippine entertainment industry.
The legacy of Carlo J. Caparas in the industry will continue despite it was recently confirmed by her daughter, Peach Caparas, that he died at the age of 80. In her Facebook post, Peach honored her father.
She thanked his father’s contribution to the industry and that every story he created will be remembered. “Dad, you will forever be loved, cherished, and honored…by all of us,” she wrote.
Peach also shared a poem dedicated to his father’s legacy, based on the article in the Philippine Entertainment Portal.

Peach also shared that the wake will start on May 27 from 12 p.m. to 12 midnight at the Golden Haven Memorial Chapels and Crematorium, in Villar Sipag, C5 Extension Road, Brgy. Manuyo Dos, Las Piñas.
In 2009, Caparas was proclaimed by then-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as National Artist under the category “Visual Arts and Film.” However, many people contradicted that decision made by the second female president in the country.
Reportedly, opposing parties pointed out that Carlo J Caparas was not the one who draw the comics based on his stories and that his films would not reach the standards of the National Artist level.
Based on the article in Spot.ph, in 2013, the Supreme Court nullified the National Artist recognition given to Caparas, as well as three other recipients Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, architect Francisco Mañosa, and fashion designer Jose ‘Pitoy’ Moreno.” SC stated in its decision that the recognition was void “because it was issued with grave abuse of discretion.”
