Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Today in Cagayan, May 16, 2024
EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 4.0 magnitude quake in Cagayan today, May 16, 2024. Here are the details.
Following the 4.1 magnitude earthquake in Davao Oriental a few days ago, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another province. According to the agency, the quake recently hit Cagayan and it has a magnitude of 4.0.
The earthquake today that struck Cagayan, Thursday, May 16, 2024, was tectonic in origin. A tectonic quake is a shaking which is a product when the Earth’s crust breaks because of the geological forces on the rocks and the adjoining plates which result to chemical and physical changes.
According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Cagayan was located at 19.05°North, 121.16°East – 008 km South 39° West of Dalupiri Island in Calayan. It had a depth of focus of 011 kilometers.
Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are expected from the said quake but there may be no aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, no intensity was recorded at the epicenter of the quake as well as the nearby areas. No instrumental intensity was recorded as well.
