Pia Wurtzbach Discusses Challenges Faced As A Half-Filipina
PIA WURTZBACH – Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach revealed the challenges she faced as half-Filipina.
Pia Wurtzbach, born on September 24, 1989, is a Filipina-German entertainer renowned for her roles as an actress, model, and beauty queen. She rose to global prominence following her triumph in the Miss Universe competition of 2015. Originally born in Stuttgart, West Germany, to a German father and a Filipina mother, she later relocated with her family to the Philippines, where she spent the majority of her formative years.
Her involvement in beauty pageants commenced during her youth, competing in local events across the Philippines. Notably, she gained significant attention upon her participation in the Binibining Pilipinas pageant, the nation’s premier beauty competition, in 2013. Although victory eluded her that year, she persisted and returned to vie for the crown in 2015. This time, she emerged victorious, clinching the coveted title of Binibining Pilipinas Universe. This triumph afforded her the esteemed opportunity to represent the Philippines on the global stage at the Miss Universe pageant.
Throughout her career, Pia Wurtzbach has garnered a massive following and has become an influential figure, not only in the Philippines but also on the international stage. She continues to be an inspiration to many, known for her beauty, intelligence, and philanthropic efforts.
Based on a report from Philstar, Pia said when entered the world of pageantry, she faced remarks of “sayang” due to her mixed heritage.
“Nu’ng pageant naman, ang sabi nila, ‘Sayang, maganda sana kaso tisay! Tapos Wurtzbach pa ‘yung apelyido, Pilipino ba talaga ‘yan?” Pia Wurtzbach recounted this during her address at the recent “Sayang? No, I’m worth it” campaign launch by L’Oreal Paris in Intramuros, Manila.
“Sumali, natalo. Sumali na naman. Natalo na naman. Nu’ng pangatlong sali, sabi, ‘Naku, ayan na naman s’ya, ‘di pa ba s’ya napapagod? Maganda sana kaya lang, tumaba na s’ya ngayon. Tsaka ‘di naman talaga s’ya pure Pinay. Ikaw ba talaga ang ipapadala natin sa Miss Universe?”
While Pia was criticized for being “too tall” during her Binibining Pilipinas journey, she was labeled as “short” when preparing for the Miss Universe competition.
“Sabi nila sayang kasi maliit daw ako. Tapos, laki daw nito (pointing at her bosoms), ‘di raw ako bagay maging beauty queen. Pang-artista lang daw ako,” she shared, drawing laughter from the audience.
