Netizens Abuzz w/ Viral Meme of ‘Updated’ P200 Bill
CHOCOLATE HILLS ISSUE – The viral meme of the ‘updated’ P200 bill circulating on social media has caught the attention of netizens
Over the past few days, Chocolate Hills has become one of the most controversial topics online due to the existence of Captain’s Peak Resort. The resort allegedly lacks accreditation from the Department of Tourism.
Proclamation No. 1037, which declared the Chocolate Hills as a protected area, was followed by a notice of violation and a temporary closure order from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) against the establishment.
The online community raises concerns about how the establishment acquired a construction permit in a protected area.
On Wednesday (March 13, 2024), DENR released a statement stating that they had issued a temporary closure order to the resort way back in 2023. Bohol Governor Erico Aris Aumentado’s office has been also vocal in addressing the concerns raised by the issue.
Recently, a meme circulating on social media has caught the attention of internet users, featuring what appears to be an updated design on the back of the P200 bill. The photo elicits reactions from the netizens.
The meme shows an edited photo of the Chocolate Hills and tarsier, famous symbols of the Philippines’ tourist attraction. The altered photo displays a resort built onto the Chocolate Hills.
A netizen named Ken Hensly shared the viral meme with a caption: “Check nyo nalang mga 200 nyo kung na update na.”
According to netizens, the resort’s presence on the iconic landscape detracts from the natural beauty of the scene. Many have questioned how such an alteration could have been allowed, raising concerns about the approval process by local government authorities in Bohol and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
