GSIS FUNERAL BENEFIT – Here is a guide on the Government Service Insurance System’s Funeral Benefit offer for member beneficiaries.

Undeniably, what scares many people in case death happens to them is the situation of the family they will leave behind. Countless people are breadwinners of their families and they children to send to school.

This is where the advantage of maintaining an active account to state-run social insurance agencies take place. One of the giants in terms of social insurance is the Government Service Insurance System or more popularly called GSIS.

The GSIS has several benefit offers including the GSIS Funeral Benefit. It provides a benefit amount for the beneficiaries of a member in case of death. Here are the primary beneficiaries of a deceased member:

  • Legal Spouse
  • Legal Child who spent for the funeral services
  • Any person who can present unquestionable evidence of spending for the funeral expenses of the deceased GSIS member

In the absence of the primary beneficiaries, the state-run social insurance institution may grant the GSIS Funeral Benefit amount to the secondary beneficiaries who are the living parents of the deceased member. In the event that there is no secondary beneficiaries, it may be granted to the legal heir set by the member.

Who are qualified for a GSIS Funera Benefit offer? Here are the eligibility criteria set by the state entity under the offer:

  • an active member of GSIS;
  • a member who has been separated from the service but who is entitled to future separation or retirement benefit;
  • an old age pensioner;
  • a retiree who at the time of his retirement was of pensionable age under RA 8291 but who opted to retire under RA 1616; and
  • a member who retired under RA 1616 prior to the effectivity of RA 8291 with at least 20 years of service, regardless of age

With regards to the Funeral Benefit amount, it may vary on a case-to-case basis. With regards to the requirements in filing for a claim, the lists of documents vary depending on who will file the claim. If the claimant is the legal spouse, here are the documents that must be submitted:

  • Original copy of Death Certificate of the member from the National Statistics Office (NSO)
  • Two valid IDs (original to be shown, photocopy to be submitted)
  • Original copy of Marriage Contract from NSO
  • Original copy of NSO-certified Birth Certificate of the claimant

In case the claimant is other than the legel spouse of the deceased GSIS member, here are the documents required by the government institution:

  • Original copy of Death Certificate of the member from NSO
  • Original & Xerox copy of Official Receipt under the claimant’s name or if a Funeral Plan was used, a Certification from the memorial service provider that the plan was availed of
  • GSIS Affidavit of Funeral Expense Form
  • Birth certificate of the claimant or valid ID (issued by the government) indicating his/her date of birth
  • Two valid IDs (original to be shown, photocopy to be submitted)
