GSIS DISABILITY BENEFIT – Here is a guide on the coverage of the Disability Benefit offer and the amount that a member may get.

Disability is something that no one would want. However, truth be told that several circumstances that may lead to it are also inevitable. With regards to the said situation, the Government Service Insurance System wants to make sure that its members have at least a “safety net” that could ease the situation when it inevitably happens.

More popularly called GSIS, the government-run social insurance institution has crafted the GSIS Disability Benefit that the members can turn to in times of Permanent Total Disability, Permanent Partial Disability, and Temporary Total Disability.

  • loss of any finger
  • loss of one arm
  • loss of one foot
  • loss of any toe
  • loss of one hand
  • loss of one leg
  • loss of one or both ears
  • loss of hearing of one or both ears
  • loss of sight of one eye
  • such other cases as may be determined and approved by the GSIS
  • complete loss of sight for both eyes;
  • loss of two limbs at or above the ankle or wrists;
  • permanent complete paralysis of two limbs;
  • brain injury resulting in incurable imbecility or insanity; and
  • such other cases as may be determined and approved by GSIS

According to GSIS, the TTD arises when the disability can be rehabilitated and returned to the normal functioning of the body but it will result to a temporary incapacity to work for an income.

Aside from knowing the coverage under the GSIS Disability Benefit, it is important to note the eligibility requirements set by the state-run social insurance institution. To qualify for the offer, the member has to be:

  • in the service at the time of disability
  • have paid at least 36 months contributions within the five year period immediately preceding the disability; or have paid a total of at least 180 months contributions prior to the disability if the member has been separated from service

With regards to the income benefits that a member may receive, it varies depending on the type of disability. The members who case is under the PTD may receive a “basic monthly pension (BMP) effective from the date of disability”.

With regards to the requirements in filing for a claim, it depends whether the claim will be filed in-person or via email. Here are the documents required by the state-run social insurance giant:

  • duly-accomplished Form for Income Benefit Claim for Payment, Parts I and II; (1 copy, original)
