Lady Customer Uses Fake Receipts Worth P200K to Deceive Online Seller
FRAUD – A lady customer has been arrested in Las Piñas City for allegedly deceiving an online seller using fake receipts.
Manila Police District Anti-Cybercrime team leader Police Captain Marlon Flores said that an entrapment operation was conducted against the suspect known as Alyas Sofia Lim. The victim Camille Arcibal, an online seller in Manila who sells imported products filed a case against Lim prompting the authorities to launch an operation.
Arcibal recounted that they had been transacting with the suspect since October, never suspecting her of being a scammer.
“Marami kaming transaction, kunwari ako po yung owner, ako din ‘yung nago-online selling. So ngayon ‘yung transaction, ‘yung payment ‘di ko na siya namo-monitor kasi una puro P2,000,” the victim shared.
The suspect appeared generous, even sending snacks to Arcibal’s admins, which lowered suspicions among them. However, in February, Arcibal noticed discrepancies in her bank account and realized she had lost over P200,000 in business.
As the entrapment operation happened, it was revealed that Arcibal had previously fallen victim to a “fake receipt scam.” Flores noted that this type of scam has been prevalent since online selling became popular in the country.
“According sa presented evidence, meron 37 na fake receipt, at yung last nga po, although identified na peke na ‘yung mga resibo, itong suspek patuloy pa rin na pinapa-deliver itong nabayaran niya daw na halagang P80,000 sa ating biktima na naging dahilan ng ating pagpaplano ng entrapment operation na nagresulta naman sa pagkakahuli po dito,” Flores added.
Arcibal who declined to give a statement will be facing charges of estafa. Meanwhile, the products mined from the victim have not yet been recovered and could potentially be sold by the suspect.
Consumers and sellers alike must remain cautious and verify the authenticity of transactions to avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
