One of the most important documents that can be issued to an individual regardless of which country he/she is in is a passport. It is the document needed in traveling to other countries and it also serves in different situations. In the Philippines, it is issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs or more popularly called DFA.
Countless Filipinos hold a passport as they constantly travel whether it may be for business or leisure. A lot of individuals include the goal of seeing the world in their bucket list. Are you one of these people?
The Philippine passport which is issued by the DFA can also be used as a document that proves the identity of a person. It is considered as one of the primary valid IDs in the Philippines. You can use it in proving your identity as you apply for a loan, buy a house, apply for a job, etc.
When it comes to traveling, the passport is really needed. There might be a long list of visa-free countries but you still need to have your valid passport.
All passports come with a validity period and must be renewed upon reaching the end of its validity. In traveling abroad, most countries have set a requirement with regards to the validity of a passport for entry. For example, a country requires a passport to be valid for at least three (3) months after the target departure of the visitor.
The Department of Foreign Affairs issues passports to both adults and minors as there are cases when it is a family trip and the parents bring their kids. However, there are different Philippine passport requirements for application among the adults and the kids.
For adults who want to apply for a passport at the DFA, here are the documents that you will need in applying:
- Confirmed DFA Online Appointment
- Personal Appearance
- duly-accomplished Passport Application Form
- original and photocopy of Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Authenticated Birth Certificate on Security Paper
- Married Females (who are using their spouse’s last name) must also present Original and submit photocopy of PSA Authenticated Marriage Contract on Security Paper or Report of Marriage
- Local Civil Registrar Copy is required if PSA Birth Certificate is not clear or cannot be read
- any of the following acceptable IDs with one (1) photocopy
- Philippine Identification (PhilID)/ePhilID
- Social Security System (SSS) Card
- Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Card
- Unified Multi-Purpose Identification (UMID) Card
- Land Transportation Office (LTO) Driver’s License (Driver’s License cards expiring on 24 April until 31 October 2023 and said expired cards perforated during the renewal process are accepted together with the temporary license in paper format).
- Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) ID
- Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) E-Card
- Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Voter’s ID or Voter’s Certificate issued from COMELEC main office in Intramuros, Manila.
- Philippine National Police (PNP) Permit to Carry Firearms Outside Residence
- Senior Citizen ID
- Airman License (issued August 2016 onwards)
- Philippine Postal ID (issued November 2016 onwards)
- Seafarer’s Record Book (SRB) or Seafarers Identity Document (SID) (*must be issued Feb 2020 onwards) issued by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA)
- Valid or Latest Passport (For Renewal of Passport)
- School ID (if applicable)
For application for a passport of a minor, here are the documents that the DFA requires to push through with the process:
- Confirmed Online Appointment
- duly-accomplished Passport Application Form
- Personal Appearance of minor applicant and either parent or authorized adult companion
- Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Birth Certificate
- Local Civil Registrar Copy may be required if PSA Birth Certificate is not clear or cannot be read
- Marriage Certificate is required if only one parent is accompanying the child
- If parents are unmarried, a Special Power of Attorney (SPA) executed by the Mother will be required if she is not accompanying the child
- If Special Power of Attorney (SPA) is executed abroad, it must be authenticated by the Philippine Embassy or Consulate

- Passport or Valid Government issued ID of either parent with one (1) photocopy
