College Students in Bacolod City Presents AI-Based Solution to Worsening Traffic Problem

Bacolod college students offered an AI-based solution to address the worsening traffic problem in the city.

Traffic congestion has become one of the major concerns of urban life in the Philippines that affects millions of commuters daily. Traffic jam is a common and broad problem, affecting everything from the busy streets of Metro Manila to the regional highways of Cebu and Davao.

The increasing number of motorcycles and tricycles, which are often used as low-cost modes of transportation, worsen the traffic situation. While these vehicles provide flexibility and accessibility, they can add to traffic congestion, particularly on narrow streets and in heavily populated areas.

Recently, a group of college students from Colegio San Agustin Bacolod in Negros Occidental is stepping up to discuss the city’s traffic issues with an innovative solution powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

The students taking Bachelor of Science in Information Technology program have developed a cutting-edge system called the Vision-Based Traffic Management System for Intelligent Signal Control.

The AI powered system is able to detect vehicles and adjust traffic light timings with precision. The project uses an advanced camera technology that can count vehicles and adjust signal timings based on real-time traffic flow.

The system operates autonomously and it does not need human intervention.

Faiz Villena, a Facebook user, shared a video clip explaining the details regarding their system.

The Bacolod college students presented the project to the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office (BTAO) believing that the system can help ease traffic congestion and improve the efficiency of urban transportation systems within the city.

“We welcome the opportunity to share more insights and details regarding our Vision-Based Traffic Management System and its potential impact on city traffic,” the group said.

The IT students are showing the power of technology with their AI-based approach to address real-world challenges and pave the way for a more streamlined urban experience.
