7.6 earthquake struck Japan and Jhong Hilario shares his experience with his family.
Kapamilya actor-host Jhong Hilario was in Japan when the devastating earthquake happened and here’s what happened to them.
7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan on New Year’s day, January 1, 2024. This calamity left scenes of devastation and claimed numerous lives. It triggered multiple aftershocks and tsunami warning was even raised.
The quake shook Noto Peninsula which caused the buildings and houses to collapse and spark fires.
As of this posting, Japan’s Meteorological Agency lifted all tsunami advisories. 64 deaths have been confirmed as of Tuesday and this was the deadliest in Japan since at least 2016. When this happened, actor Jhong Hilario and his family was there and they have experienced the intensity of the shaking.
They were in Osaka for the Holidays and he was with his wife Maia and their daughter Zarina. Experiencing the strong tremors was a nerve-wracking event.
They were staying on the 22nd floor of a building when the tremor struck and being in an elevated place, they really felt the shaking. They also saw how the buildings swayed and was even able to record some parts of that unexpected moment.
“Nakuhanan ko din ng video ‘yung pag-uga makikita mo doon sa video na gusto talaga bumaba ni Maia,” he said. His wife wanted to go out of the building but they don’t have other choice. Using the elevator at times like that would put them in worse situations and using the ladder would not be ideal as they have a baby.
With such shaking, he knew that it was a strong one.
When they went down as they decided to to evacuate their space, they were amused to see how people downstairs were just doing their usual things normally. People were unaffected by the strong shaking.
He asked a room service about the event and he got this as a reply, “Oh yeah, it’s normal.”
“Nakakatakot din kasi may tsunami warning daw, pero at least safe kami,” he added.
