Airport Taxi Charging P10,000 to Taiwanese Passenger Sparks Outrage Online

Airport Taxi Earns Criticisms for Charging P10,000 to Taiwanese Passenger

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – An airport taxi driver charging P10,000 from a Taiwanese passenger for a ride has sparked outrage online.

A video circulating on social media has caught the attention of netizens as it shows an airport taxi driver allegedly demanding over P10,000 from a Taiwanese passenger for a ride from NAIA Terminal 3 to Terminal 4.

In the video, the passenger is seen handed a fare matrix detailing the taxi charges based on destination. The matrix, adorned with a logo, indicates fares of P11,500 to Terminal 1, P12,000 to Terminal 2, P13,500 to Terminal 3, and P10,300 to Terminal 4 and Any Part of Metro Manila.

However, the video does not reveal the vehicle’s body number or license plate.

According to LTFRB spokesperson Celine Pialago, both the agency and the Manila International Airport Authority have initiated an investigation into the incident. A netizen reportedly shared the video on a group page where she and her boyfriend are members.

Currently, the taxi driver has not been identified at the airport, Pialago stated.

“For sure taxi driver ito dahil sabi doon sa post ‘yung guard daw po witihin the vicinity ang nagtawag sa kaniya. So, those are part of the initial investigation po,” she explained.

MIAA is currently looking into reports that a security guard directed the Taiwanese passenger to the airport taxi that was charging an exorbitant fee.

“Lahat po ng nangyayari sa vicinity ng airport, MIAA na po ang gumagawa ng investigation. Kami naman po sa LTFRB ang naghahanap doon sa driver upang mabigyan siya ng multa,” Pialago said.

The penalty for the first offense is P5,000, while the second offense incurs a P10,000 fine and potential impounding of the vehicle. The third offense carries a P15,000 fine and may result in franchise cancellation and license revocation.

According to LTFRB, the yellow airport taxi has a flagdown rate of P75, while the coupon taxi operates on a fixed rate depending on the destination, which passengers are aware of before boarding.

LTFRB emphasizes that the incident in the viral video does not align with any taxi category. Pialago reiterated that the charged amount is comparable to a round-trip plane ticket within the Philippines, surpassing the cost of renting a car or van.
