Math Edition of ‘The Boat is Sinking’ Captures Attention of Netizens
The Math edition of ‘The Boat is Sinking’ during the year-end party of Quezon City Science High School goes viral online.
As the Holiday season approaches, various Christmas parties are in full swing in schools and workplaces. Apart from group presentations, raffles, feasting, and contests, parlor games take center stage.
One of the popular parlor games is “The Boat is Sinking.” At the signal of the host, participants need to form groups based on the numbers he announces. Those who fail to join a group in time are eliminated from the game.
Norman B. Tabios, a Senior High School teacher from Quezon City Science High School adds a unique twist to this popular game. The use of a calculator was allowed during the game.
The mechanics are quite challenging, requiring participants to solve mathematical equations or problems to advance to the next round.
Teacher Norman shared his inspiration for creating this unconventional game. Recognizing the capacity of his students, especially since they attend a Science high school, he wanted to incorporate a challenging yet enjoyable activity into their year-end party.
“This is part po of our games for our year-end party. I instructed my students to facilitate a game per group and one of the groups decided to have ‘The Boat is sinking with a twist’ and integrate Pre-Calculus topics for the right answer,” Tabios said.
The educator said that students enjoyed the party due to the game “As usual po, nag-panic po sila and nasasagot naman po nila ‘yong mga tanong and then masaya rin kasi may element of difficulty and challenging po.”
