Police Arrests Stepdad for Smashing Grade 4 Student w/ Badminton Racket

A 29-year-old stepdad in Barangay Culiat, Quezon City was arrested after physically harming a Grade 4 student using a badminton racket.

Quezon City Police District Station 14 Deputy Station Commander Police Major Jefry Gamboa reported that the child abuse incident took place on Sunday evening (November 27, 2023). The suspect happens to be the stepfather of the nine-year-old victim.

According to the initial police investigation, the child was at a computer shop when his drunk stepfather arrived. The stepfather talked to the child’s playmate, asking them to call his stepson.

Spotting a badminton racket in the place, the suspect for reasons unknown, started hitting the child, intending to send him home. The victim suffered injuries to the head and back, prompting concerned residents to rush him to the hospital.

“Pagdating niya doon kinausap niya yung kalaro ng bata na tawagin yung anak-anakan niya tapos may nakita siyang raketa ng badminton at dahil sa kalasingan wala namang.. sa hindi alam na dahilan ay pinagpapalo niya yung bata para pauwiin niya bata,” Gamboa said.

The child’s mother went to the hospital, to check on her injured son.

Further investigation revealed that this was not the first time the stepfather had physically hurt the child. It appears that whenever he is drunk, he resorts to hurting the child. Authorities are now considering to file charges against the suspect.

The suspect admitted to causing harm to the child, acknowledging that he had been drinking. He apologized for his actions, expressing regret to both the child and his wife.

The suspect is now facing charges under the Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act. Aiming to ensure the welfare of children from any form of abuse or exploitation.
