Heavy Rains Trigger Flooding in Several Areas in Quezon Province
Several areas in Quezon province are submerged in floodwaters due to the relentless overnight rainfall.
On Saturday (November 25, 2023), the relentless overnight rain resulted in widespread flooding in various parts of Quezon province, submerging many areas. As of now, the heavy downpour shows no signs of subsiding, causing concern among residents affected by increasing water levels.
Towns such as Tagkawayan, Calauag, Lopez, Gumaca, Plaridel, and Atimonan experienced severe flooding, with water levels reaching waist-high in the town of Lopez. The Maharlika Highway, particularly in Atimonan and Plaridel, has become a challenging road for vehicles due to flooding.
The Quezon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office is closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the province’s residents.
In Tagkawayan, the supposed three-day camping event for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts had to be cut short and canceled. The flooding reached the tents, prompting the organizers to send the participating youth back home for their safety.
Several rice fields are now submerged due to overflowing rivers, affecting agricultural areas. The flooding of these fields poses a threat to crops and adds to the challenges faced by local farmers.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Quezon Province, Laguna, and the Bicol Region can expect cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to a shear line.
There is a potential risk of flash floods or landslides due to the moderate to heavy rains, according to the weather agency.
Meanwhile, the shear line will affect the eastern section of Southern Luzon while the easterlies will affect Visayas and Mindanao, according to Weather Specialist Patrick Del Mundo.
Gale warning is up over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Batanes, and Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, and Isabela.
