Filipino Para Chess Team Bagged 3 Gold Medals in Asian Para Games 2023

Filipino para chess players clinched three gold medals at the 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China on Thursday.

The Philippines’ gold medal campaign in chess began with Menandro Redor in the men’s individual standard VI-B2 event. Redor, a multiple-time ASEAN Para Games gold medalist who is partially blind and 49 years old, secured the country’s first gold in chess.

In the final round, he drew with the top seed, Aydogdy Atabayev from Turkmenistan, and won the gold through a tiebreaker against Amir Rabbi Khorasgani of India. Both Redor and Khorasgani had 5.5 points each in the individual rapid B2-B3 category.

Subsequently, the Filipino chess team claimed the gold after Arman Subaste and Darry Bernardo contributed four and 3.5 points, respectively. In the women’s individual standard PI category, Cheyzer Mendoza excelled and secured another gold for the Philippines, based on the article of Philstar.

Mendoza, a lawyer by profession, finished with 5.5 points and tied with Indonesia’s Yuni but won the gold on a higher tiebreaker. The third gold in chess was won by the team of Redor, Darry Bernardo, and Arman Subaste in the men’s team standard VI-B2 event.

Additionally, Arena Grand Master Henry Roger Lopez, FIDE Master Sander Severino, and Jasper Rom clinched the silver medal in the men’s team standard PI category. Lopez also secured second place overall in the individual standard PI, while Severino ranked third in the same event.
