Quezon City Hall Employees Flee After Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake Strikes Batangas

Quezon City Hall employees have evacuated following a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Calaca, Batangas.

On Friday morning (October 13, 2023), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in Calaca, Batangas, at 8:24 a.m. The quake has a depth of 14 kilometers.

The epicenter of the earthquake was identified at 13.89°N, 120.78°E, approximately 5 kilometers south and 39 degrees west of Calaca, Batangas. The powerful tremor quickly gained attention due to its potential for aftershocks and damage. The quake was felt over various parts of Metro Manila.

The seismology agency reported that the tremor was felt at the following intensities. 

  • Intensity 5 – Batangas City, and Lemery, Batangas
  • Intensity 4 – Muntinlupa; Sta. Teresita, BATANGAS
  • Intensity 3 – Tagaytay City, Cavite; Talisay, San Jose, Lipa, Padre Garcia, and Laurel, Batangas
  • Intensity 2 – General Trias, Cavite; Pateros, Quezon City, Valenzuela City, Pasay in Metro Manila; Meycauayan, Bulacan; Santa Cruz and San Pablo, Laguna
  • Intensity 1 – Pasig, Caloocan 

Muntinlupa City Mayor Ruffy Biazon announced the suspension of classes in all public schools to allow for the inspection of school buildings. Meanwhile, the suspension of classes in private schools was left to the discretion of school management.

Earlier, 5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hit Batangas

Recently, video footage emerged showing employees from Quezon City Hall evacuating the building due to the intense shaking. This video garnered a variety of reactions from the online community.

In the video, government workers remained outside the hall to ensure their safety from any potential danger posed by aftershocks. As of this writing, no casualties or significant damage were reported.
