53-Year-Old Driver Balances Driving Job and Education
Benjie Estillore, a 53-year-old driver, is juggling his driving career and his studies in Political Science.
While many drivers call it a day and head home after their shifts, Benjie Estillore takes a different path. After a long day behind the wheel, he trades in his steering wheel for a stack of books as he embarks on his evening studies.
Estillore, who currently works as a Transportation Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) driver, has a dream of completing his education. His path to this goal has been far from ordinary. He lost his parents at a young age, which prevented him from continuing his education beyond the first year of high school.
Benjie considers his wife, a teacher, a true blessing and the driving force behind his decision to return to school. Inspired by her dedication to her online classes, he decided to pursue his own education.
“Nag-o-online class siya, ako naman nanonood. So roon ako na-inspire sa kanya at sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Gusto kong mag-aral. Parang nag-spark yung tenga niya na narinig niya yun,” Estillore said.
He enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS), where his wife teaches, and after years of dedication, he proudly completed his high school education with honors. But Benje didn’t stop there.
The driver continued his studies at the University of Makati, where he is now a first-year student pursuing a degree in Political Science. Despite his academic pursuits, he sometimes faces amusing situations on campus.
“Kasi may mga magulang, kasi mga magulang ang kumukuha ng uniform. Ako, pumila ako roon. Sabi ng ano, ‘Meron ka bang anak dito nag-aaral?’ Sabi ko, ‘Ay, wala. Ako po yung estudyante,’” he added.
The hardworking man plans to pursue a law degree after college.
