Cayetano Blocked Hontiveros’ Resolution over Dispute w/ China — Don’t they Deserve to be Called Out?

China Visibly Wants To Stop PH From Entering Territories It Claimed To Be Theirs — Despite the Arbitral Ruling

China is undeniably the aggressive party in the territorial dispute over the West Philippine Sea, isn’t it?

The territorial dispute between the Philippines and China is ongoing for decades now. The 2014 attempt to finally end the issue was not even recognized by the Chinese government. It remains to be aggressive over its claim.

In 2014, the territorial battle was brought to the arbitral tribunal. The decision was released in 2016 and it sided the Philippines. Despite that the ruling overrode its nine-dash rule, China remained ever persistent over its claims.

The Chinese government did not hesitate to build its security arm in the disputed territories. It even built an artificial island. The Philippines remains to be in the pursuit of a diplomatic resolution of the issue.

However, after several reports of incidents that Filipino fisherfolks were not allowed to fish by the Chinese authorities in the disputed areas, a few days ago came reports that China built barriers after claims of PH intrusion in Bajo de Masinloc.

The barrier was built by China against PH even if Bajo de Masinloc is within the 200-nautical mile EEZ of our country.

Senator Risa Hontiveros penned a resolution urging the PH government to sponsor a resolution before the UN General Assembly to call out China over the activities of its vessels. It gained the support of Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri and Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Raffy Tulfo.

However, such resolution was blocked by Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano. He questioned Hontiveros why only China will be called out citing the structures of other countries.

I believe that among the parties, it is China that is the aggresive one about its claim. It even built barriers against PH. On top of it all, the assertions of the Chinese government never recognized the arbitral ruling.
