Class Suspensions for Friday (September 22, 2023) Due to Volcanic Smog From Taal Volcano
WALANG PASOK – Several local government units have declared class suspensions in various areas due to the volcanic smog from Taal Volcano.
On Thursday afternoon (September 21, 2023), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported the presence of vog over Taal Lake, as observed by the Taal Volcano Network. This vog has persisted in the region up to the present moment.
The vog has been observed since 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, indicating the presence of volcanic smog. They emphasized that the upwelling of steam from Taal Main Crater Lake continues, generating steam plumes that reach altitudes of 2,400 meters.
A large cloud of sulfur dioxide has also been identified west of Taal Lake. According to the agency, the emission of volcanic sulfur dioxide from the main crater has reached a whopping 4,569 tons per day.
On Friday (September 22, 2023), various local government units announced the suspensions of classes in the affected areas to ensure the safety of students and teachers.
