TUY, BATANGAS – The volcanic smog coming from Taal Volcano sends 45 students to hospital after experiencing breathing difficulty.

Provincial Disaster Management office head Dr. Amor Calayan reported that the students experienced chest pain, dizziness, and itching of the skin and throat after inhaling the smog. The learners received first aid and were allowed to go home.

BATANGAS, PHILIPPINES – Several students were rushed to the hospital after experiencing difficulty on breathing due to volcanic smog from the Taal Volcano in Tuy, Batangas.

On Thursday (September 21, 2023), the learners from a school in the municipality of Tuy, Batangas suffered chest pain, dizziness, and itching of the skin and throat after inhaling the smog that had seeped into their classrooms.

Provincial Disaster Management office head Dr. Amor Calayan said that the 45 affected students were promptly provided with first aid and they were not required to be confined in the hospital. The young learners were allowed to return home later.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has been closely monitoring the situation of Taal Volcano. The volcanic smog has been a growing concern in Batangas since early September.

The agency has issued advisories to the public about the potential dangers posed by this volcanic smog. It can cause inflammation and irritation in the respiratory system, leading to a range of health issues.

The local authorities are encouraging residents to take necessary precautions to safeguard their health. Wearing face masks is highly recommended, especially in areas where vog concentrations are high.
