Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Today in Cagayan, September 12, 2023

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 6.3 magnitude quake in Cagayan, September 12, 2023.

Following the 4.9 magnitude earthquake in Cagayan early yesterday, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in the same province. The quake hit a part of Calayan. According to the agency, it has a magnitude of 6.3.

The earthquake today that struck Cagayan, September 12, 2023, at 07:03 a.m. was tectonic in origin. It specifically hit Dalupiri Island.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Cagayan was located at 19.30°North, 121.22°East – 022 km North 03° East of Dalupiri Island. It had a depth of focus of 041 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are expected from the said quake as well as aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, the following intensities and instrumental intensities were recorded in these areas:

    • Camalaniugan, Lal-Lo, and Santa Ana, Cagayan

    • Narvacan, Santa, and Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur
    • Aparri, Cagayan
  • Intensity III
    • Bucay, Lacub, Lagayan, and San Juan, Abra
    • Banayoyo, Bantay, Burgos, Caoayan, San Emilio, San Esteban, San Ildefonso, San Vicente, Santa Catalina, Santa Cruz, Santiago, Sigay, and City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur
    • Solana, Cagayan
    • Santo Domingo, Nueva Ecija
  • Intensity IV
    • Luna, Apayao
    • Batac City, Currimao, and Pinili, Ilocos Norte
    • Claveria, Enrile, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, and Santa Praxedes, Cagayan
  • Intensity V
    • Bacarra, Bangui, Burgos, City of Laoag, Pagudpud, Paoay, Pasuquin, and San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte

Earthquakes are among the natural incidents that cannnot be predicted accurately as most experts in the field agree on. Thus, most countries really make sure that they have a bureau or an organization that monitors a quake incident across their nation.
