Phivolcs Announces Increased Seismic Activity at Kanlaon Volcano, Alert Level 1 Remains

Kanlaon Volcano Remains Under Alert Level 1 Due to Increased Seismic Activity , Phivolcs Says

The volcanology agency Phivolcs announced increased seismic activity at Kanlaon Volcano, maintaining alert level 1.

On Wednesday morning (September 6, 2023), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology released an advisory regarding the increased seismic activity observed at Kanlaon Volcano.

A total of 36 volcanic earthquakes have been recorded this week, with the latest data spanning from 5:00 AM on September 4 (Monday) to 7:50 AM on September 6. 34 out of 36 quakes are classified as volcano-tectonic or VT earthquakes.

The magnitudes of these seismic events ranged from ML0.8 to ML3.4, with depths varying from the surface to nine kilometers beneath the northeast edge of the Kanlaon range.

In addition to these seismic readings, ground deformation data obtained via continuous GPS and electronic tilt measurements have revealed a short-term inflation trend on the middle slopes since March 2023 and a longer-term inflation trend on the entire edifice since March 2022.

It is important that the public is aware that Kanlaon Volcano is still on Alert Level 1. However, Phivolcs stresses that if the current upward trend in monitoring parameters continues, the volcano’s status could be raised to Alert Level 2, indicating increased unrest.

Phivolcs also prohibits the public from entering the four kilometer Permanent Danger Zone due to the sudden and hazardous phreatic eruptions occurring without warning within this area.

The seismology agency has also instructed the civil aviation authorities to advise pilots to avoid flying near the volcano’s summit region.

Meanwhile, DOST-PHIVOLCS continues to closely monitor the activity of Kanlaon Volcano, and any new developments will be announced. Safety precautions must be strictly observed to ensure the safety of residents in the area.
