One of the most popular works of Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal is the novel Noli Me Tangere. Written in 1887, the title of the novel is in Latin which means “Touch Me Not” or “Huwag Mo Akong Hawakan” in Filipino.

Noli Me Tangere is the first novel written by Dr. Jose Rizal prior to El Filibusterismo. It was published when he was only 26 years old. It is pivotal in the building of the Filipinos of national identity. It is also through this work that the Filipino hero indirectly influenced the revolution in the country.

Juan Crisostomo Ibarra

Among the many Noli Me Tangere characters, the main character is Juan Crisostomo Ibarra or commonly called Ibarra. He is a Filipino-Spanish man who grew up in the Philippines but spent some years abroad to study. When he returned to the country, he discovered about the death of his father and decided to honor his legacy by living his life like the way his father lived his.

Maria Clara

She is the image of the Filipina in the novel. She is the daughter of Kapitan Tiago and Doña Pia Alba but her mother died during childbirth. She grew up under the guidance of her father and her aunt, Tiya Isabel. She is the lover of Ibarra since childhood. However, in the later part of the novel, it was found out that she’s the daughter of Padre Damaso, a former curate of the San Diego Parish who forced her mother to an affair.

Padre Damaso

He is a former curate of the San Diego Parish Church. His character is snobbish and rude. He always criticizes other people most especially Ibarra whom he had greatly embarrassed in front of the people of sacristy.

Don Santiago delos Santos

More commonly called in the novel as Kapitan Tiago, he is the only son of a wealthy trader. He is the husband of Doña Pia Alba and has stood as the biological father of Maria Clara before it was discovered that she is the daughter of Padre Damaso.

Pilosopo Tasyo

One of the most significant Noli Me Tangere characters is Pilosopo Tasyo or Don Anastacio. His name is because of his fond ideas that match the minds of the townspeople. He came from a wealthy family but his mother did not allow him to be formally educated in the fear that his son will be too intelligent.

Elias

There were several instances in the novel when Elias who came from a wealthy family indebted towards Ibarra helped the Filipino-Spanish man and vice versa. They have constantly supported each other several times in the story until he died after the guards shot him.

Sisa

Sisa or Narcisa depicts the mother’s love to the children. However, she was locked up in jail and when she received a pardon, she went crazy after learning about the supposed death of Crispin, her youngest son.
