After the win versus China, Chot Reyes announced his decision to step aside as Gilas coach.
Under-fire Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes is stepping aside as the head coach of the Philippine men’s basketball team.
The PH team remained winless in the World Cup but not until tonight in their match against China. Before the victory, head coach Chot Reyes was roasted online for the performance he showed in the previous games that left the team with tough losses.
He conceded and expressed that Gilas failed to get the job done in the World Cup. The team bowed out of the race for Paris Olympics berth but this recent win can give them an invitation to the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
On Saturday, September, Gilas won versus China crushing the rival with a 96-75 win.
After this win, during the press conference, the head coach made an announcement.
He expressed that with the disappointing result for Gilas in the World Cup, considering that PH is the host, “it may be time for somebody else”.
“It is time to step aside,” he told the reporters. The SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) has been informed about this by him even before the game with China.
“I signed up to do a job, and we did not deliver the result. So, I think it is time to step aside and allow the SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) to make a decision for the good of the program,” he added.
They did not perform and like what he said prior, he take full accountability, hence, he is stepping aside. He noted that the coaching process for the team has been “brutal”, not for him, but for his family and loved ones.
Meanwhile, the PH team finished their FIBA journey with one win.
