MIKE ENRIQUEZ – The veteran broadcast journalist has the nickname “Booma” and this is why he was called by this name.

The passing of Miguel “Mike” Enriquez has broken a lot of hearts. He was the man behind the famous and iconic lines “Hindi namin kayo tatantanan” and “Excuse me po!”

He was a staple in Philippine television and is among the lead broadcasters of GMA’s flagship newscast “24 Oras” and other GMA news programs. He became iconic because of his sharp voice which can easily recognized as his and his unconventional way of delivering the news.

His career in broadcasting spanned over 50 years and viewers believed that it would take so much for someone to be able to replace the place he left in the media industry. Some even believed that no one could even level or surpass what the legendary newscaster had achieved.

Enriquez died at the age of 71 and among the health problems he had suffered while he was still alive included kidney problems and diabetes. He also underwent regular dialysis before, a heart bypass, and a kidney transplant.

When he was alive, he was “Booma” inside the newsroom. Where did this nickname come from?

The name “Booma” was coined because he was previously fat he was often teased to be “Booma”. This is a character created by comic book cartoonist and novelist Mars Ravelo.

In a report from PEP, Mike was at first mad about being called by this nickname. But as time went by, he eventually got used to it, and until everyone in the newsroom.

Mike, before his career in broadcasting started, dreamed of becoming a priest but was not allowed by his parents. finished grade school in La Salle in 1964, high school at La Salle Greenhills in 1968, and got his commerce degree from De La Salle University in 1973.
