Bacolod City Declared Under State of Calamity Due to the Effects of Super Typhoon Goring

The Sangguniang Panlungsod Council of Bacolod City has granted approval for the declaration of a State of Calamity.

On Wednesday (August 30, 2023), the request by Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo ‘Albee’ Benitez for the declaration of Bacolod City under a State of Calamity was approved by the town’s Sangguniang Panlungsod Council.

The decision is a response to the massive flooding that has devastated a large number of barangays throughout the city. The move points out the city’s commitment to addressing the risks posed by the effects of Super Typhoon Goring.

The City Mayor’s request was granted during the 61st regular session. It is a proactive measure to enable a quick response to the basic necessities of typhoon-affected residents in the town.

The city council’s decision is a response to Resolution No. 018 Series of 2023 filed by the town’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The resolution is entitled “Resolution Recommending To The Sangguniang Panlungsod The Declaration Of Bacolod City Under A State Of Calamity Due To The Effects Of Typhoon ‘goring,’ Which Caused Flooding Affecting Thirty-Three (33) Out Of Sixty-One (61) Barangays.”

The declaration of a State of Calamity empowers the local government to access necessary resources more readily and allocate them efficiently to help affected communities. It also promotes collaborative efforts to channel aid and resources towards recovery and rehabilitation.

The resolution also extends the suspension of classes at all levels in the public and private schools in the City of Bacolod on August 31 and September 1, 2023, to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and school employees.
