Rare Oarfish Found by Residents of Baybay City, Leyte

Baybay City, Leyte residents stumbled upon a rare oarfish in the coastal area “namangha kami kasi first time namin makakita ng oarfish”

The oarfish can be found deep within the world’s seas, where sunlight hardly penetrates and pressures are crushing. The oarfish, often seen as a forerunner of myths and legends, remains a mystery waiting to be solved by anyone daring enough to plunge into the abyssal world.

Despite its frightening appearance, the oarfish is a friendly creature that poses no harm to humans. It is one of the world’s longest known fish species, reaching lengths of up to 50 feet or more.

Because of its deep-sea home, encounters with the oarfish are extremely rare. When these creatures come closer to the surface or wash ashore, they create an uproar of scientific curiosity.

According to folklore, the appearance of deep-sea creatures in shallow waters inside an impending earthquake. However, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology explained that there are no scientific instruments that can predict when an earthquake will occur.

Recently, a Facebook user named Reyvan Salubre has shared the photo of a deceased oarfish in Barangay Guadalupe Baybay City, Leyte. The post garnered various reactions from the netizens.

Rare Oarfish

On August 2, 2023, a group of children playing by the riverbank accidentally became the unaware pioneers of this unexpected encounter. Their youthful curiosity led them to an incredible discovery which quickly caught the attention of the entire barangay.

The kids approached the deep-sea creature that had washed ashore. The residents started to gather around the lifeless oarfish.

“May mga bata po na naglalaro sa may ilog. Sila po ang una nakakita [then] nilapitan namin at namangha kami kasi first time namin makakita ng oarfish. Nadatnan namin ang Oarfish na patay na at medyo mabaho na po,” Salubre said.
