Some of rising stars in the Philippine showbiz industry had independent films as their entry to the field. One of them is young actor Elijah Canlas whose first professional acting role was in the 2014 independent movie Sundalong Kanin.
Elijah Canlas Family
Born on August 16, 2000 in Manila, Elijah Canlas’ real name is Elijah Luiz Madiclum Canlas. He was born to a non-showbiz family and the second of three (3) siblings. Elijah Canlas’ parents are Rommel Canlas and Lyn Canlas. His nickname is “Jelo”.
The actor-commercial model has an older brother named Jerom. Elijah Canlas’ younger brother is JM. All of them are actors and have played several roles on television, films, and theater.
Elijah Canlas’ mother, Lyn Canlas, is a ballerina and theater actress in Bacolod. At their young age, they grew up witnessing theater performances and being exposed to arts.
Elijah Canlas Educational Background
The actor-commercial model finished his grade school at Statefields School, a private school located in Bacoor, Cavite. He had his junior high school at the Philippine High School for the Arts. He finished his senior high school at MINT College.
Currently, Elijah is taking Bachelor of Arts in Philippine Arts at the University of the Philippines Manila while pursuing his acting career in the Philippine showbiz industry.
Elijah Canlas Showbiz Career
Elijah Canlas’ age was only 14 years old when he played one of the main roles in the independent film Sundalong Kanin in 2014. It was a Cinemalaya entry and under the direction of filmmaker Janice O’Hara.
In the same year, he auditioned for the main role, Kalel, but he was rejected as they were looking for someone who could on the role of a mestizo son of a Spanish friar. In 2018, the actor looked for a talent manager and met director Jun Robles Lana who gave him the lead role Kalel in a film.
Elijah Canlas’ awards include his Best Supporting Actor award for his role in the movie Edward in 2019. The said recognition was given by the Pampelikulang Samahan ng mga Dalubguro (PASADO). The other nominees for the said award were actors Ian Veneracion, Joross Gamboa, and Baron Geisler.
Elijah’s Brother JM’s Death
JM Canlas, brother of Elijah, died at 17 years old. He passed away Thursday morning of August 3, 2023. He reportedly struggled from his mental health prior to his early demise.
