EARTHQUAKE: 5.0 Magnitude Quake Rocks Samar

Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake in Eastern Samar, July 10, 2023

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 5.0 magnitude quake in Eastern Samar, Monday, July 10, 2023.

Following the 4.6 magnitude earthquake that hit Sulu a few months ago, another significant quake was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake hit a part of Eastern Samar. According to the agency, it had a magnitude of 5.0.

The earthquake that struck Eastern Samar, Monday, July 10, 2023, at 09:01 p.m. was tectonic in origin. It specifically hit Llorente.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Eastern Samar was located at 11.42°North, 125.38°East – 018 km North 88° West of Llorente. It had a depth of focus of 032 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake but there may be aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, the following intensities were felt in these areas:

  • Intensity II
    • Arteche, Dolores, Oras, and San Policarpo, Eastern Samar
    • Barugo, City of Baybay, Capoocan, Carigara, Jaro, Leyte, and San Miguel, Leyte
  • Intensity III
    • Can-Avid, Guiuan, Sulat, and Taft, Eastern Samar;
    • Abuyog, Alangalang, Babatngon, Burauen, Dagami, Mayorga, Pastrana, Santa Fe, and Tabontabon, Leyte
    • Basey, Calbiga, City of Catbalogan, Motiong, Pinabacdao, and Santa Rita, Samar
  • Intensity IV
    • Borongan, General Macarthur, Lawaan, Maydolong, Salcedo,
      and San Julian, Eastern Samar
    • Dulag, Palo, Tanauan, and Tolosa, Leyte
    • Tacloban
    • Marabut, Samar
  • Intensity V
    • Balangkayan, Hernani, and Llorente, Eastern Samar
