DOT Should Have Done A Contest Says Bela Padilla

Bela Padilla Reacts To DOT Controversial Tourism Video

DOT – Here’s actress Bela Padilla’s reaction to the Department of Tourism’s (DOT) controversial tourism video.

The Department of Tourism contracted DDB Philippines, an award-winning ad agency, to design and create the tourism marketing paraphernalia. The new tourist tagline is “Love the Philippines,” which replaces the previous “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” slogan.

However, just days after the introduction of the new promotional video, numerous Filipinos criticized it for using stock video snippets of tourist locations from other countries.

The video clips were taken from Storyblocks, a stock footage source that requires a subscription. This incident made international headlines as well.

Following the fiasco, DOT declared on July 4 that it has terminated its contract with DDB Philippines.

Bela Padilla offers some ideas in the midst of the Philippine tourism campaign controversy. She said the DOT should have held a contest or crowdsource for the new tourism campaign from locals.

The actress-director said this in response to the DOT’s controversial tourist video, which drew heavy public scrutiny. On July 5, Bela tweeted about it. It had been a week after the contentious video was unveiled.

“My two cents. (That no one’s asking for, I know.)”

“If someone had released a nationwide call for locals to shoot content of what they love about our country, (all my free diving videos are taken by bangkeros with their personal GoPros that I rent for the day in the islands I go to and the quality is always superb) and offered a reward of say…P10,000 to 100 winners…the campaign would have had a genuine, heartfelt, local perspective at a fraction of the amount spent,” Bela added.

She went on to call the incident a “wasted opportunity.”

“Dami pa sanang nabigyan ng validation…Sense of fulfilment at aminin na natin, tulong pangpinansyal,” she said.
