Student Lost His Life After Getting Trapped in Jeep Crash w/ Steel Fence in Cavite
Just days before his moving up ceremony in junior high school, a student tragically lost his life after a jeep collided with a steel fence in Dasmariñas, Cavite.
The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the jeep, coming from a supermarket, experienced brake failure. The victim was identified as Renz Jether Matias, a 16-year-old Grade 10 student. He was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
The victim’s moving up ceremony was scheduled for July 10, according to his family. “Hindi ako makapaniwala na ganon ang nangyari sa anak ko,” said Renz’s father, Ricardo Matias.
According to Jaderille Danielle Matias, the victim’s older sister, Renz was a kind and diligent student.
“Lagi iyang nagpapatulong sa akin ng assignments niya, nagpapa-correct ng essays niya, grammar. Ito ‘yung sobrang mami-miss ko sa kapatid ko. Hanggang ngayon hindi pa talaga nagsi-sink in sa akin na wala na kapatid ko,” Jaderille tearfully shared.
Based on the investigation, the jeep had just finished delivering coconuts to the supermarket. It was descending from the delivery area on the third floor when the brakes failed. The jeep’s driver, Zaldy Bago, who had been delivering coconuts in the area for several years, was subsequently arrested.
“Hindi na kinaya ng engine brake tsaka sa center island kahit ibinangga ko na,” Bago explained. “Humihingi ako ng kapatawaran… hindi ko naman kagustuhan,” he added.
Despite this, Renz’s family is determined to file a complaint against Bago.
“Itutuloy namin ‘yung kaso. ‘Yun ang gusto ng mama ko, ‘yun din po ang gusto namin. Kasi sinasadya man o hindi, wala na pong magagawa. Nawalan na po ng buhay ‘yung kapatid ko, hindi na ‘yun mababalik,” Jaderille stated.
Bago will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.
