Fire Engulfs Manila Central Post Office Due to Car Battery Blast

Car Battery Blast Causes Fire in Manila Central Post Office

An accidental fire engulfs Manila Central Post Office in Lawton, Manila last month due to a car battery explosion.

This was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), which stated that the fire originated from the explosion of a discharged car battery. The battery overheated and ignited, eventually spreading and consuming the surrounding combustible materials in the Mega Manila Storage Room.

According to the BFP, the storage room contained various items such as office supplies, thinner, and paint, which contributed to the rapid spread of the fire

In relation to this incident, the BFP announced that they consider the investigation into the post office fire closed. On the other hand, PHLPost Postmaster General Luis Carlos acknowledged the findings of the BFP’s investigation. Currently, their focus is on the recovery and rehabilitation of the historic building that was engulfed in flames.

The fire broke out on the evening of May 21, 2023 and started in the basement of the building, quickly spreading throughout the premises. It took firefighters approximately 31 hours to completely extinguish the flames, which triggered a general alarm.

Eighteen individuals, mostly firefighters, sustained injuries because of the fire.
