Rising Basketball Hero JV Gallego Killed in Devastating NLEX Accident
JV GALLEGO – Fans, teammates, and fellow athletes are mourning the untimely passing of former San Beda star JV Gallego following a fatal crash on the NLEX.
The Philippine basketball community is mourning the tragic loss of former San Beda University guard and NCAA men’s basketball champion John Vincent “JV” Gallego, who passed away following a road accident in Bulacan. He was 28 years old.
Gallego died after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a concrete barrier along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) in Meycauayan City, Bulacan, on Saturday, July 18. The incident cut short the life of a promising athlete who had proudly represented the country and built a successful collegiate basketball career.
According to the initial investigation by authorities, Gallego was traveling back to Manila with his wife when their vehicle collided with a concrete barrier in the Libtong area of Meycauayan, Bulacan. Emergency responders rushed the former basketball star to a nearby hospital in an effort to save his life.
However, Meycauayan City Police Station chief P/Lt. Col. Melvin Florida confirmed that Gallego was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. His wife survived the accident, according to authorities. He is survived by his wife and their young daughter.
Gallego’s family later confirmed the heartbreaking news through a Facebook announcement.

“Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may visit starting tonight at 7:00 PM at: #20 MockingBird Street, St. Francis, Pandayan, Meycauayan, Bulacan.
“Thank you for your prayers and support during this difficult time.”
The announcement quickly drew messages of sympathy and condolences from friends, former teammates, coaches, and basketball fans, many of whom remembered Gallego not only for his talent on the court but also for his dedication and sportsmanship.
Gallego first gained national recognition after representing the Philippines in the 2016 FIBA Asia U18 Championship. He began his collegiate basketball journey with National University in the UAAP before transferring to San Beda University, where he became a key member of the team that captured the NCAA Season 99 championship in 2023.
After his collegiate career, Gallego continued playing professionally, suiting up for the Bicol team in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) in 2024. His untimely passing leaves a deep void in Philippine basketball, with many remembering him as a champion whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
