Earthquake: 4.8 Magnitude Quake Rocks Surigao del Norte

Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake in Surigao del Norte, May 30, 2023

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 4.8 magnitude quake in Surigao del Norte, Tuesday, May 30, 2023.

Following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that jolted a part of Davao Occidental a few weeks ago, another strong quake was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake hit a part of Surigao del Norte. According to the agency, it had a magnitude of 4.8.

The earthquake that struck Surigao del Norte today, Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 01:08 a.m. was tectonic in origin. It specifically hit San Francisco.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Surigao del Norte was located at 09.89°North, 125.40°East – 013 km North 09° West of San Francisco. It had a depth of focus of 013 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are expected from the said quake but there may be no aftershocks. According to the quake-recording bureau, Intensity V was felt in Surigao City while the following instrumental intensities were recorded in these areas:

  • Intensity I
    • Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte
    • Hinanungan, Southern Leyte
  • Intensity V
    • Surigao City
